How to Stick to Your New Year’s Resolutions

If you have a New Year’s resolution in mind that you’d like to kick into high gear – and become part of the 8 percent of people who actually stick to their New Year’s resolutions – read on. Gerber Life shares some tips and tricks to help you make – and keep – your resolution.

Decide on One Goal

One of the secrets to accomplishing goals is to keep things simple. Take it one step (and one goal) at a time. If you take on too much, you could be setting yourself up for failure. Instead, set yourself up for success by deciding on one goal that you would like to see yourself accomplish in the New Year. Having a single objective will make focusing on your intended accomplishment a lot easier.

Tell the World

Have a Facebook account? Post your commitment online for all of your friends and family to see. If you’re not into the whole social media thing, tell those in your inner circle about your resolution. The great thing about “going public” with your New Year’s resolution is that doing so will help to keep you on track. Sharing your commitment will also help you gain the support and encouragement of those you love most.

Promise Yourself a Prize

If positive reinforcement works for children and dogs, why not make it work for you? Be good to yourself. Think of a reward you’d like to receive from yourself for reaching your goal. There’s nothing quite like the promise of a long-desired reward to keep you motivated if the going gets tough.

Think Positively

Many people associate New Year’s resolutions with giving up something. If you take that approach, you’re focusing on the negative. Instead of resolving to give up sweets, for example, resolve instead to eat plenty of healthy foods. Don’t just quit smoking – take up healthy breathing. Sounds more appealing, doesn’t it? That’s the idea.

The real trick to sticking to your New Year’s resolutions is commitment and positive thinking. If you can train your brain to approach it from that point of view, there’s really nothing that’s beyond your reach.
