Insurance fraud is a crime and a costly problem for all of us. It is estimated that false claims cost insurance companies $80 billion dollars a year according to the Coalition Against Insurance Fraud. Unfortunately, these losses result in higher premiums and fees being passed on to consumers.
What is it? Fraud is an intentional act of deception, misrepresentation and/or concealment done to gain something of value. Fake accidents and claims are signs of fraud.
Contact your state insurance department, National Association of Insurance Commissioners (www.naic.org), or the National Insurance Crime Bureau (1-800-835-6422) if you are suspicious of fraudulent activity.
Please note: Some states' laws make it a crime to knowingly provide false, incomplete, or misleading information to an insurance company on an application or claim form for the purpose of defrauding an insurance company.
