Rainy Day Activities used to literally refer to what to do with children kept from their usual outdoor play pursuits. Nowadays, for many parents, it’s a struggle to get the kids to play in the sun and leave the video games behind. But all parents still have those days when space is limited and the kids get bored and restless. Parental and magazine websites are filled with options and ideas, but if your need for rainy day activities is “precipitated” by the loss of electrical power too, you’ll need to check out these sites now while your entire computer Internet equipment works.
FamilyEducation.com offers at least a year’s worth of indoor activities, primarily for children ages 6 to 10. Reviewing them, one is reminded of a time when families played card games or board games as rainy day activities. Just because the games are old hat to you, however, doesn’t mean they won’t be new and engaging to your kids. Even though it may have been years since you’ve played a card game with an actual deck of playing cards, pick one up at the dollar store next time you’re shopping. Younger children will find “Go Fish” entertaining. Older kids can be taught gin rummy, draw poker or blackjack.
RedbookMag.com reminds us all of how magical a simple blanket thrown over a table and a chair or two can be to children. Sofa cushions and pillows can only add to the allure. Be sure to include a flashlight to help the kids avoid the temptation of matches or lighters. Some rainy day activity suggestions included water, both inside and out. Either stock the bathtub with scuba gear and water toys and dress the kids in bathing suits or put a raincoat on them and take them outside despite the rain.
Crafting and cooking constituted a good many suggestions. Some parents reported a box of craft supplies expressly for this purpose while others grab a large cardboard box from a nearby business and let the kids decorate their “playhouse.” Colored sugar sprinkles were made for rainy day activities and if you chose this activity, at least you’ll have a homemade cookie or two to enjoy with a cup of coffee.
